TRIANGLE PARK

Common Ground Forest Park, in collaboration with the City of Birmingham Parks and Recreation Department, supports Triangle Park through various projects, including organizing cleanup days.

In addition to park maintenance, CGFP also hosts a series of community events in the park throughout the year.

Reimagining Triangle Park

It has been over 20 years since Triangle Park last received major improvements. Now is the time to reimagine and revitalize this beloved neighborhood space.

A neighborhood-wide survey conducted in late 2023 highlighted what residents value most about the park—its expansive grassy playfield and abundant shade—while also identifying areas for improvement. Frequent park users emphasized the need for updated playground equipment, more versatile spaces for all ages, and enhanced safety, particularly regarding ground surfaces and fencing. Residents also stressed the importance of preserving the park’s aesthetic and ensuring it continues to complement the surrounding neighborhood.

In response, Common Ground Forest Park engaged Macknally Land Design to create a conceptual master plan for the future of Triangle Park that preserves its unique character while addressing community priorities.

The conceptual plan below was made available for in-person review and comment during the Forest Park Friendsgiving event. Feedback is invited online through November 30, 2025, and a formal presentation will be made at the Forest Park–South Avondale neighborhood meeting in January 2026.

Existing Conditions
In recent years, Triangle Park’s playground equipment and fencing have shown significant wear. The seesaw and ride-on bouncers have been removed, and remaining structures show rust and damage. The surrounding fence has loose or missing boards.

Erosion around the playground and picnic areas has exposed tree roots and created uneven surfaces, limiting accessibility. The lack of smooth, hard surfacing makes navigation difficult for visitors with mobility challenges.

environment featuring new playground equipment, improved accessibility, and thoughtful site enhancements designed to serve the community for years to come.

The updated playground will embrace organic tones and celebrate the park’s natural environment, drawing inspiration from Forest Park’s historic character and timeless neighborhood architecture.

Proposed Site Features include:

  • Terraced, accessible surfacing throughout playground and picnic areas.

  • Preservation of the beloved grassy playfield and existing shade.

  • Defined perimeter and access gateways to ensure a safe environment for visitors of all ages.

  • Accessibly walkways throughout the park.
